We all deal with tech debt every day. This inGraph speaks to that:
The time scale: 2 years. 24 months of an all-but-defunct service just kind of lingering out there, all of its “important” functionality re-routed to the New Hotness but some endpoints left hanging. 730 days of “Well, but it does still cover this one use case so we need to keep it around.” 17,520 hours of potential for a wrecked oncall when it breaks in some weird way.
Craftsmanship? Nah. Someone Else wrote that shit years ago, and it’s got more cruft than…well…than a Big Ol’ Crufty Thing.
There is a happy ending to this story, folks. This particular service (I’ll not name names) will be decommissioned later this month. The only way I could be
happier about that is if it’d happened 2 years ago.
